Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I register a domain name? A.
Registration of a domain name is as simple as filling out a form. When you fill out the registration form, the only information required of you is your contact and billing information. If you do not have your own name servers, it is free to park a name at 12register.com.
Q. What does “Administrative Contact” mean on the registration form? A.
When you fill out your registration form, you will be asked to provide information about the Administrative Contact. This is the person who is in charge of the domain name. The Administrative Contact can modify the domain name record, sell or transfer the domain, or abandon the domain name. In most cases, this will be you. Only under extraordinary circumstances should you allow anyone else to be listed as Administrative Contact.
Q. What does "Billing Contact" mean on the registration form? A.
The Billing Contact will be the person responsible for the payment of your domain name. This amounts to $12 for 1 year.
Q. What is "domain parking?" A.
When you register a domain name, $12register.com requires you to provide information about two DNS servers, which will host your domain name. Since you have probably not arranged for two DNS servers to host your domain name, $12register.com will "park" your name on their DNS servers for FREE. When you are ready to build your web site, you can transfer the domain name to the servers your new host is using.
Q. What are DNS servers? A.
DNS servers are the computers that keep track of domain names and IP addresses, and direct your Internet requests to the right computers.
Q. Can I register any name I want? A. In most cases, yes. You will want to make sure that you do not register a name that is trademarked. The situation is very unclear from a legal perspective. You may find a domain name that infringes on someone's trademark can, in certain cases, be taken from you.
Q. What is a domain name? A.
A domain name is a shortcut that enables DNS computers to route Internet users to the proper server. An Internet address usually begins "http://www." and is followed by the domain name. Domain names end in one of the "top level" suffixes, such as .com or .net, or by a two letter country code, such as .ca for Canada or .uk for England.
Q. Will I own the domain name that I register? A.
In a way, yes. You can do as you please with it, but no one really "owns" domain names in the same way no one really "owns" telephone numbers. However, it is listed under your name, and you can sell it or trade it as you wish. US courts have recently held that domain names are property.
Q. Do you track .net or .org names? A. Yes.
Q. Can I sell any domain name that I get here? A. Sure. It's yours. Do what you want.
Q. Can I transfer my domain name to another server or web host? A. Sure. It's yours. Do what you want.
Q. Do you buy domain names? A. No.
Q. What are the various methods of payment you accept? A. All major credit cards.
